ABOUT THE USTA: The United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in this country. In addition to owning the U.S.Open and selecting members of the U.S. Davis Cup, Fed Cup, Olympic and Paralympics teams, the USTA administers a variety of programs nationwide for players of all ages and ability levels.

WHAT IS USTA JR. TEAM TENNIS: USTA Jr. Team Tennis is the largest youth tennis program in the country, helping girls and boys get on the court, and have a good time. It has been developed to give children the opportunity to play tennis as a team sport just the way they are able to play soccer, basketball, and baseball.

Court Dimensions above:
Red - 36ft x 18ft (6-7 yr olds)
Yellow - 60ft x 21ft (8-10 yr olds)
Blue - full size court
A NEW APPROACH: By adjusting the court dimensions to a less intimidating 36 and 60 feet, juniors can enjoy the satisfaction of rallying the ball and focus on skill development. It is also believed that this the new format will create a better experience for children and that it will increase participation. Team formats, parental involvement modified courts and equipment are the foundation for QuickStart tennis.

Tennis has always been taught on a full-size court with full-size equipment in the United States. Beginning players (6-7 year olds) start on a 36'x18' court and use smaller racquets and foam balls. They (8-10 year olds) advance to a larger 60'x21' court with a low-compression ball as their skill set increases.

WHO CAN PLAY: The USTA Jr. Team Tennis 10 and under program is for girls and boys ages 6-7 & 8-10. Whether or not your child has ever held a racquet, there’s a spot on the team for them.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT: Parents play an active role as a tennis organizer or a team tennis coach/assistant coach. Children enjoy being with their parent and other children of the same age while competing as part of a team. For this to happen, parents are needed to organize leagues by recruiting coaches/assistant coaches, securing courts, selecting teams, posting schedules and results and providing awards. All parents are encouraged to participate with their child and help as assistant coaches. A minimum of 2 parent coaches/assistant coaches are needed for each team during each match.

Parent coaches/assistant coaches are needed to conduct practices and supervise matches. The best way to learn the basics of coaching is through an on-court Coaches' Workshop. The workshop is mandatory for each team coach/assistant coach. There is no previous tennis experience required prior to taking the Workshop. This 3 hour workshop will be take place May 17 at the Towpath Tennis Center from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

FEE: Cost of the program is $70. This includes a new tennis racquet, team t-shirt, Junior Tennis Workbook, one (1) year USTA junior membership, annual subscriptions to USTA Magazine, SMASH Magazine, Midwest Tennis News, and access to play USTA Sanctioned Tournaments plus much more. Returning players in the same age group as last year can choose between a racquet or bag.
